When it got here time for Gillian Stevens to transform her dated Vancouver kitchen (“let’s simply say it wanted some assist,” she summarizes), she did what her coaching as a photographer had at all times taught her to do: search for mild. On this case, there wasn’t a lot. “The earlier house owners had put in a cabinet over the one window,” she explains of the darkish and small room.

As an alternative of flattening partitions or including extra home windows (which might have have meant much less space for storing), although, she and her husband, at their designer’s urging, opted to maneuver the only window. “We actually struggled making an attempt to suit all the pieces we wished into the room: unobstructed countertop house, open shelving, a 36-inch fridge, and a big window overlooking the backyard. We couldn’t appear to make all of it work with out compromising,” says Gillian.

“When our kitchen designer advised we take away the present kitchen window, with my love of pure mild, I couldn’t fathom eradicating a window. However doing that meant we might have all of the issues on our record, and with it being a smaller room, having a big window on the adjoining wall would exchange the sunshine we misplaced.”

The couple labored with Vancouver-based Kitchen Art Design on the rework. “Our want record was fairly lengthy. I had been designing this kitchen in my head for a few years, so I had a reasonably particular thought of what I wished to do,” says Gillian. “The most important problem was becoming all the issues we wished into the house. There have been many forwards and backwards drawings with our cupboard designer.”

In the long run, they bought all the pieces they wished: “It’s a dream come true in each means.” Beneath, she particulars her finest kitchen rework choices.
