Fundamentals requirement for the house has emerged out of roof itself i.e. shelter. In common terminology, it is often said that a man basically wants shelter, i.e. roof when he actually wants a house. It is the protector from heat, snow, or rain for which a person desires a roof. The houses of the poorest of the poor possibly have only roofs or shelters, though they may not be having walls or floors, or other luxuries and we still call it a house. Hence roof is itself a necessary element of the house. The roof is used to guard the house against all types of weather. A Roof must be strong to resist snow and wind load.
The basic objective of the house or home is to provide protection in the form of shelter. While roof construction, a roof is covered by covering materials that are backed by a structural member. The roofs can be two types either flat or sloping. There are various alternatives available in roof however it wholly depends on the geographical region of a country and as per the personal choice of the owner. A good roof increases the life expectancy of a building. To build a good roof structure, a safe foundation is also required.
The Roof Needed to Satisfy the Following Functional Requirements:
01. Weather Resistance:
The roof covering should offer adequate resistance to resist the effect of weather elements such as the wind, rain, sun, snow, etc. harsh weather does affect the roof harshly, which leads to the weakening of the surface. This could be a bit risky for those who are living under that roof.
02. Strength and Stability:
The roof structure should always be needed to be strong and stable enough to take up the anticipated loads safely including wind load. The roof strength and stability are the factors with which the useful age of the roof can be determined.
03. Heat Protection:
The harsh effect of sunlight on the roof structure needs to provide adequate protection against heat. Both to resident and material used at the time of the construction.
04. Sound Insulation:
The roof construction for all buildings should provide an appropriate degree of insulation against sound from external sources in order to prevent the roof from its adverse effects.
05. Fire Resistance:
The roof should offer an adequate degree of fire resistance also in order to give protection against the spread of fire from any adjacent building and to protect from the early collapse of the roof. The form of roof construction should also be in such a way that the spread of fire from its source to other parts of the building by way of a roof cannot occur and damage.
- Day Lighting:
The roof is needed to be designed according to may if provide daylight in buildings with large floor areas. So that daylights does not affect the roof too much extent
