Whereas many people have been working away on various jigsaw puzzles the previous two years, Robyn Segal and her husband, Marshall Rifkin, have been puzzling over a large-scale model: their century-old row home in Washington, D.C.
“We have been in search of a house that we might renovate,” says Robyn, the founding father of Peltrie Place, a boutique actual property growth agency. “The home had nice bones, however the 100-year-old flooring plan was formal and had a handful of underutilized linked rooms that blocked all the gentle and weren’t sensible for the way we dwell in the present day.”
Among the many Twenty first-century upgrades wanted: higher use of area and far more gentle—all whereas maintaining the historic components (the steps, doorways, and molding) intact. So the couple gutted the whole area; shifted partitions and rearranged rooms; and added a two-story, 15-foot addition to the again of the home, alongside architect Patrick Brian Jones and Robyn’s dad, who served because the challenge’s common contractor. “Given the mounted footprint of the house, all of it felt like a jigsaw puzzle,” says Robyn. “Taking area from one half meant lowering area from one other.”
Robyn and Marshall wished the home to be sensible, snug, and simply lived in—not only for them however for his or her pup, Markley, too. In each design determination alongside the best way, they went for the dog-friendly possibility—leading to an area that’s each effectively designed and fear free.
Have a look (and preserve a watch out for the numerous canine-approved particulars).
